When Jazz was young, musicians were hired to perform at house parties where the tenant would pass the hat to raise their rent. A style of music blossomed there which came to be known as "rent party" or "skiffle" music. The music is usually unplugged, sometimes irreverent, and always interactive.
The Bait Shop Boys are carrying on the tradition of rent party music. They do scads of call back numbers and prefer to stroll through the crowd and stir up the party. Their repertoire includes the songs of Fats Waller, Bob Wills, and Louis Jordan as well as some better known Jazz standards. The usual line up includes fiddle, slide guitar, ukulele and dog house bass with trumpet and-or mandolin joining in on occasion.
Here's a song for your listening pleasure. We'll try to offer up a new tune every month or so, so keep coming back to hear more.
